Vitria’s Vocabulary Management Features

The four types of vocabulary management capabilities provided in BusinessWare and related Vitria products are:


Vitria provides both syntactic and semantic validation capabilities to ensure that data is correctly formatted and also makes business sense. Syntactic validation checks the format of each field in a business object for valid lengths, values, type, etc. Semantic validation includes rule-based comparisons between fields in a business object or document to ensure that the information is compatible. These automated checks of data quality reduce downstream process exceptions that may be very expensive and time-consuming to

BusinessWare includes very powerful and flexible transformation capabilities based on XQuery and other industry standards. These capabilities combine the ease of a drag and drop visual mapping environment with specialized capabilities for transforming data and documents in XML and many other formats.

Pre-Built Transformations
Vitria provides some specialized modules for BusinessWare that translate messages and documents to and from specific industry-standard vocabularies. Examples include EDI (X12 and EDIFACT), HIPAA and HL7 for Healthcare, and SWIFT for Banking.

BusinessWare uses Value Chain Markup Language (VCML), which provides a common business vocabulary for exchanging electronic data with external partners. VCML simplifies the conversion of existing electronic documents into an XML format that retains the structure and business rules embedded in well-defined documents such as EDI.
