TXU is an electric  utility company headquartered in Dallas, Texas with over 2 million  customers.</p>

<p><strong><em>What Was TXU’s Challenge?</em></strong></p>
<p>In 1996, TXU became the largest provider of electricity and natural  gas in the state of Texas. In 2002, Texas deregulated its electric  market. As a result, TXU was forced to participate in a statewide  competition against more than 200 such retail electricity providers.</p>
<p>What did all of this mean for TXU? Essentially two factors separated  TXU from its competitors: (1.) price and (2.) customer satisfaction.</p>
<p>TXU needed a complete solution that would provide it with the  visibility across all critical business processes, including the new  customer enrollment process (known as the “Move-In Process”). This would  ensure a better customer experience.</p>
<p><strong><em>Before Vitria Came Into the Picture</em></strong></p>
<p>TXU had explored many alternatives to solve this challenge with its  existing SAP CRM and Billing applications for quite some time.</p>
<p>Although its SAP solution aided the flow of information between all  business groups inside the organization, it didn’t fully provide the  level of granularity and visualization that TXU was looking for. Our  solution complemented SAP quite well by providing this added  functionality.</p>
<p><strong><em>How Vitria Came Into the Picture</em></strong></p>
<p>Sendero Business Services, a Dallas-based consulting firm, realized the potential of our <a title="M3O Operational Intelligence Suite" href="http://www.vitria.com/products/m3o-operational-intelligence-suite/m3o-in-the-cloud/">M<sub>3</sub>O Operational Intelligence Suite</a> to aid TXU (which is how we became “the unexpected hero”). <p><a title="new joint initiative" href="http://www.unfoundation.org" target="_blank">The UN Foundation</a> and Vodafone Foundation last month announced a new joint initiative to identify how mobile technology can be effectively utilized in  Brazil’s indigenous communities to increase access to information and  services, such as healthcare.</p>
<p>Almost three years prior to this initiative, Vitria was long underway  to embark a on a joint venture of its own with a telephone company (<a title="Oi" href="http://www.oi.com.br/" target="_blank">Oi</a>), an LP gas distributor (<a title="Ultragaz" href="http://www.ultragaz.com.br/pt/Institucional/" target="_blank">Ultragaz</a>), a credit card company (Oi Paggo), and a business development company (<a title="MID Business" href="http://www.midbusiness.com.br/" target="_blank">MID Business</a>) to utilize mobile technology to deliver LP cooking gas to Brazil’s indigenous communities.</p>
<p>The goal of the project was to allow a rural customer to be able to  purchase an LP cooking gas canister by placing an order via SMS message  to Ultragaz, complete the purchase with a prepaid credit card from Oi  Paggo, and confirm the payment via another SMS message.</p>
<p>The challenge for MID Business and their three partners lied in  successfully integrating the three different partner technologies to  provide one overall seamless solution.</p>
<p>As a result, MID Business had four key selection criteria in choosing a data integration platform solution:</p>
<ol>
<li>Cost</li>
<li>Deployment time</li>
<li>Ease-of-use for end business users</li>
<li>Visibility and tracking of each purchase order</li>
</ol>

<p>Apart from being an event sponsor, Vitria participated in a Round  Table Expert Panel on the topic of “How to anticipate situations and  adapt enterprise processes and resources with BPM technology?” Almost  100 people came to witness this great debate between Vitria and <a title="Single Consulting" href="http://www.singleconsulting.com/" target="_blank">Single Consulting</a>, a Spanish consulting firm.</p>
<p><strong>Round Table Expert Panel:</strong></p>
<p>Some of the questions debated were:</p>
<ol>
<li>What does “real-time visibility of critical processes” imply?  Indicate a practical example. With which technology can it be  achieved?</li>
<li>What does “anticipating possible situations, problems, and opportunities” imply?</li>
<li>What does “run impact analysis” imply?</li>
<li>Practically speaking, how can processes adapt themselves automatically to the situation? Describe a practical example.</li>
<li>What are the best ways to finance a BPM project based on expected ROIs?</li>
